We seem to have a bit of a thing for Anglepoise lamps at Byatt-Smith Antiques and this one is not only beautiful but also interesting. Designed by engineer George Carwardine and manufactured by Herbert Terry & Sons, the Model 1227 was first produced in 1935 and featured a three step base and multipart fork. In 1938 the design was changed, using a single cast fork and two-step base, keeping the rest of the lamp the same. The next year saw the beginning of World War II; Terry & Sons made very few lamps for the commercial market during this time and it wasn't until the end of the war that a new redesigned 1227 was released, making this example quite a rare one.

Yes, it has paint over it - but given that these were designed for utility, we like it.

For a similar example (although not quite as good) see The V&A Collection, Museum No. M.23-2013. Another almost identical example in the same gold colour can be found on the Anglepoise 'How can I date my Anglepoise' support page, finally there is a great wordpress article by illustrator Ben Langworthy called 'A very rough guide to dating your 1227'.

Condition.

In full working order, the surface with paint marks and splatters, mainly to the shade, commensurate with age and use.
